On a beautiful, hot Saturday recently I was invited to join the family for a boating trip to Sauvie Island for a bar-b-que and some relaxing time on the beach. Grandpa Ray is more than happy to give Miss Ruby a turn at the wheel.
Grandpa Ray, don't you think you should be helping Ruby look out for what lies ahead??
And Miss Ru -- you better keep your eyes forward, too.
Our beach landing was close to a small lighthouse.
As we arrived Ruby said "Oh, I just love the sand!"
I'm not sure Aunt Lindsey can keep away from fast Carson! But she tried.
This little man LOVES LOVES LOVES the sand -- all over him. He was a real sand puppy.
Ru and her Daddy having a moment. Looks like one of those "dreamy" moments to me.
Hot dogs and elk burgers hot off the grill! Yum! Carson polished off one dog and asked for a second.
Ruby wanted to take a rest on the sand. She is such a napper, still.
Carson couldn't get enough digging time. Guess he was full of energy after 2 hot dogs!
"Grandma Julee -- Will you help me make a sand angel?"
Grandpa Ray helped them start digging a big hole -- to which Ruby filled up with pails and pails and pails of water. They worked together on this hole for almost an hour.
It was so deep we almost lost Carson in the hole.
While Carson dug, Ruby brought in more pails of water. She must have poured in 50 buckets-full of water.
Another HUGE ship came up the river the other direction from the first vessel. It was low in the water and really pushing water out in front. As we watched, the waves got bigger and bigger and bigger. Suddenly we yelled "Grab the kids. Grab the towels, Get the cooler and chairs and shoes!" "Oh my gosh -- get the boat!" The waves were so big and intense that our little boat almost got swamped. Casey grabbed the back, Ray the side and the two grandmas were holding down the anchor that was in the sand. It seemed like either the boat would wash away or get swamped and tip over. We all got into action, while Kristin and Lindsey held the kids. Ruby was crying. After a few tense moments, it was over. But the boat had gallons of water inside. The picture below is water pouring out of the back end -- it did that for a good 15 minutes. Everything in the boat was wet. We were just grateful no one was hurt and the boat was OK. Whew............

That called for a rest on the beach before we gathered everything up and headed for home.
Carson and Casey drove us safely back to the dock.
Thanks family for including me in a fun day at the beach.
